Work environment

Intent of the process

The intention of this process is to staff multiple PC-02 positions. A pool of qualified candidates may be established and used to staff similar positions with various tenures within Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Both Streams: Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Stream 1 ONLY:
Experience conducting or supporting research (data analysis) relevant to a natural, physical or applied science.
Experience with computer programming or scripting languages for management, analysis and/or quality control of large datasets.
Experience using statistical analysis software.

Stream 2 ONLY:
Experience conducting scientific research in biological sciences or limnology.
Experience in working with a team of researchers or support staff.
Significant experience in conducting field work on lakes, where significant is defined as two field seasons or more of boat-based sampling.
Experience in the deployment, retrieval, and downloading of data from autonomous aquatic samplers including dataloggers.
Experience in univariate and multivariate statistical analyses of water quality or biotic community data.

Both Streams: Post-graduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Stream 2 ONLY:
Advanced or wilderness first aid certification.
SVOP and SDV-BS certification.

Stream 1 ONLY:
Experience programming in R language.
Experience using other computer programming or scripting languages (e.g.Python, MatLAB, C, C++, java, golang, etc.) (Excluding R).
Experience programming with any of the following computer software applications:

Experience collaborating with various groups in the private or public sector (e.g., stakeholders, Indigenous partners, academic institutions, government representatives, etc.).
Experience preparing scientific publications and reports.

Stream 2 ONLY:
Experience in SCUBA diving, including the possession of a valid PADI advanced. diver certification or equivalent.
Experience collecting and preparing water samples for chemical analysis.
Experience collecting lower trophic level samples.
Experience collecting and/or preparing sediment or soil for geochemical and/or particle size analysis.
Experience using/ calibrating/maintaining water quality sensors.
Experience deploying and downloading Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers.
Experience writing code to program data loggers or other scientific equipment.
Experience mapping, soldering, or testing electrical connections of environmental sensors.
Experience trailering boats or trailers.
Experience using MS Access to manage data.
Experience analysing limnological data.
Experience preparing scientific publications and reports.
Experience using ArcGIS to create maps of sampling locations, of environmental data, or bathymetric charts.
Experience using Spatial Analyst to conduct spatial analysis of environmental data.
Experience in procurement of scientific equipment and supplies.
Experience using or creating mathematical models of ecological processes.
Experience in supervision of employees.

Stream 2 ONLY: Knowledge of freshwater cage aquaculture waste deposit characteristics and
impacts to benthic ecology.
